Recreation and Wellness

Recreation and Wellness programs help people to network, form social groups, learn new skills and enjoy life in healthy ways. Special events, outings and other activities are held regularly throughout the year.

Summer Recreation
Recreational opportunities are offered to Bissell Centre participants throughout the summer months. A variety of activities are planned, from arts and crafts in our Drop-In Centre to picnics at Edmonton’s parks. These activities are provided free of charge; participants need only sign up to be involved.

“I like that it gives underprivileged peoples the chance to get out and experience positive activities they may never have even thought about. The price is right, and it’s a true social service.”

Recreational activities in the Robert Tegler Friendship Room (our Drop-in Centre) are also provided throughout the year, such as arts and crafts, music sessions with instruments provided, card games, bingo and movie days.

Seasonal Events
There are numerous events occurring each year at Bissell Centre and at different locations partnering with other inner-city agencies. One of the highlights is the Festive Season Giveaway in December where program participants have an opportunity to choose gifts and necessities for themselves and their families.

Moonlight Bay Centre
Moonlight Bay Centre is located on Wabamun Lake and is the setting for summer retreats for adults and families who participate in programs at Bissell Centre. The retreats offer a reprieve from inner city stress, providing a much needed and healthy break. Daytime trips and stays up to four nights are offered. For everyone attending camp, transportation, meals and lodging are provided.

Recently, MBC has been transformed into a self-sustaining venture – a social enterprise – generating enough revenue to sustain operations to send as many individuals and families to MBC as possible.  It is now a retreat centre for organizations, individuals and groups to rent for meetings, events, and retreats!

Soap Stone Carving
We have many artists who come to Bissell Centre and we regularly hold soap stone carving workshops. Below are some images from one of those workshops.
