Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities

Interested in a regular, ongoing commitment? We ask for a minimum pledge of three months working at least 2 shifts per month. Requirements include: online application form, online orientation, screening questionnaire, criminal records check, child intervention check (as applicable), and two references.

Please note that most roles are only available Monday to Friday 9 AM – 4 PM.
We do not have evening or weekend options at this time.

Community Meals

Help organize food donations and prepare and take food to our community space programs, prepare food for Childcare, Women’s Hot Lunch, and Casual Labour programs.
Minimum age: 16


Assist with daily administrative duties, sort and distribute mail, and direct participants, donors, and volunteers to the appropriate individuals and services.
Minimum age: 18


Work alongside childcare professionals providing quality care to preschool children and help engage the children socially, intellectually, and creatively.
Minimum age: 16

Community Space

Help distribute supplies and goods, make coffee, organize laundry sign-up, and provide information, resources, and support to adults in this space.
Minimum age: 18

Community Closet

Help individuals access clothing and hygiene items in our Community Closet for free, as well as keeping inventory organized to provide a dignified experience.
Minimum Age: 18

Community Programming

Put your unique skills and talent to work as part of one of our ongoing programs, including helping with computer basics, music programs, tax preparation, and more.
Minimum Age: 18

Group Volunteer Opportunities

Looking for a way to give back as a team, family, or organization? We invite groups ranging from 2 to 10 people to come learn more about our work, and to help prepare food or assist us in our Community Closets and special projects.

Are you interested in completing a practicum student placement with us?

Special Event Opportunities

Looking for a one-time commitment? We host a number of events and fundraisers throughout the year which require volunteers, which are a great fit for corporate and community-based volunteer groups, as well as individuals. Age restrictions may apply.


Casino Fundraiser
September 30 and October 1

Join us at Starlight Casino in West Edmonton Mall as a banker, cashier, or in another role to help raise funds benefiting Bissell Centre’s programs and participants! Apply Now

Festive Giveaway
December 16, 17, and 18

Help us create a free Christmas Shopping Wonderland in support of the families we work with each year! Volunteers are in charge of the set-up, re-stocking, and distribution of all gifts during event days.

Coldest Night of the Year
February 22, 2020

Brave the cold with us to support Bissell Centre’s third annual Coldest Night of the Year walkathon to help raise money and awareness of what our homeless participants experience during the long winter.

Giving Sunday
December 8 and 15

Help unload and sort Christmas gifts donated by Edmontonians throughout the giving season! Community members are then given the opportunity to “shop” for these gifts for their family members during Festive Giveaway.

Special Meals
October 10 and December 12

Join us throughout on special occasions such as Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas to help us prepare and serve a nutritious and delicious meal in our Community Space to our community members!

New Year’s Day Dinner
January 1, 2020

Ring in the new year with us by preparing and serving food for approximately 800 people during our New Year’s Day meal! Volunteers can also help with setting up, greeting guests, and providing security.
