Job Summary

Bissell Centre is looking for an Interdepartmental Support Worker (Relief) to support three departments: Drop-In Services, Employment Services, and Family Support Services.

Specific responsibilities of the position include:

General responsibilities:

  • Maintain accurate written file notes, computer records, program information, and critical incident reports.
  • Standing for long periods of time throughout the shift
  • Able to lift 50 lbs comfortably
  • Able to use a computer to access email, record case notes & record hours worked

Department: Drop-In Services
Title: Essential Services Worker

  • Assist participants in accessing basic services available in Drop-In
  • Build relationships with participants by engaging participants in meaningful conversation
  • Monitor activities & participant behavior in the Drop-In. Enforce agency policies & protocols as required
  • Using non-physical means, deescalate participants engaged in conflict
  • Assist participants with internal & external referrals
  • Maintain the cleanliness of Drop-In

Department: Employment Services
Title: Employment Support Worker

  • Provide intakes & assessments for employment programming
  • Conduct participant assessments
  • Support Casual Labor program by liaising with employers & dispatching participants to temporary work opportunities
  • Provide coverage in Drop-In Services
  • Support Skill Enhancing Programming focused on development of participants’ hard skills (i.e. First Aid or WHIMIS tickets) & soft skills (i.e. Anger Management)

Department: Family Support Services
Title: Family Support Worker

  • Provide crisis intervention support as required
  • Engage participants in purposeful conversation
  • Work collaboratively with participants to set goals, develop a service plan and provide follow-up on achievement of established goals
  • Answer promptly and courteously all incoming phone calls and process immediate concerns to ensure immediate social and emotional support is provided.
  • Make appropriate referrals to health and community services and, when necessary, advocate for participants to receive those services
  • Provide baby supplies when appointments have been scheduled

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Social Work or equivalent
  • Minimum 1 year relevant employment experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, result oriented, good time management, strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core
  • Familiarity working with high risk populations and an understanding of Aboriginal cultures, history and current issues
  • Familiarity with issues of poverty, homelessness and Edmonton’s urban core
  • Criminal Record and Child Welfare checks are required

Hours

  • Shifts will be mutually agreed upon between Management & Employee
  • Shifts will be up to 8 hours and will be scheduled between 6:30am-5:00pm Monday-Friday & 11:00am-5:00pm Saturday, availability is an asset

Wage

$16.25/ hour, plus 4% vacation pay
